This revered panel is painted in tempera. Tempera is powdered pigment mixed with egg yolk and water. It dries rapidly (it is similar to modern-day acrylic paint, except that the powdered pigments are mixed with a resin). Gold leaf (thin sheets of real gold glued over a red background) has been applied to Christ’s robe and the Madonna’s cape.

The sentiment and love between these two figures have made this a popular icon.
