Icon of loving tenderness-‘umileniye’. In comforting His mother, Christ stretches towards Her, pressing cheek to cheek. He wraps His arm around Her neck. The icon radiates spiritual calm and tenderness. The human child is God. The prototype for this icon was brought from Constantinople to Kiev in 1395. It is the most venerated of Icons in Russia. Miracle icons often have a special day of commemoration; the Vladimir icon has three. The silver cover is known as an oklad. The edges of the icon have been cut to fit the oklad. The frame cuts off the lower painted area, and part of Mary’s veil.
