The Kazan icon helped to establish the Christian faith amongst the people, recently freed from the Tatars. Its iconography dates back to 1579, when the Virgin Mary appeared at Kazan. It is derived from the Hodigetria Smokensk icon and highlights Christ's divinity. The Virgin's head is inclined towards Christ, lending the icon a characteristic Russian tenderness and humanity. Mary contemplates her coming suffering. She had already been warned by Simeon's prophesy that 'a sword shall fall and pierce your heart also'. http://www.cottontown.org/page.cfm?language=eng&pageID=1995 |
