St Demetrius, son of a noble family, served as an officer under the Emperors Diocletian and Maximion. He was martyred for converting to Christianity. He is shown as a young knight on horseback, about to kill his enemy, Kalojan, the Bulgarian King, with a lance. He saved Greece from the Bulgarian siege.
