St Nicholas is shown with Our Lord and Our Lady on either side, protecting him. The manner in which the draperies are painted reflects the transfigured state of the Saint's body. Instead of using naturalistic curves, highly stylised straight lines are used. Highlights of pure white used on the face-around the eyes, the brow and cheek bones, give the impression of pure spiritual light emanating from the saint. The Episcopal stole signifies the lost sheep that, when found by the Lord, was carried on his shoulders.
