| St. Theodore the Studite — Mosaic incon in the church of Nea Mone, Chios. St. Theodore (759-826) became famous for his struffles against the Iconoclasts, his reforms of monastic life, his opposition to the secularization of the Church, and his writings. He organized the library of the monaster of St. John of Studius, set up scriptoria, and founded a school for the education of children. The typikon of the monastery of Studius, believed to have been compiled by St. Theodore, was also observed in the monasteries of Mt. Athos. His forceful personality played an important role in the prevalence of Orthodox convictions in the second phase of the Iconoclast controversy.
