Gamma Alpha Sigma Sorority
In the year 1937, following the purchase of the house at 15 DeCamp Street, the house was remodeled to accommodate the church sanctuary, along with a recreational hall. These areas were both located on the first floor, and classrooms for Sunday School and Greek School were located on the second floor.
A group of young ladies felt a need for a social club to organize social events for the St. George community. Although this club was not affiliated with the church directly, all members of the social club were also members of St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Their club was named the “Gamma Alpha Sigma Sorority” and was limited to a maximum of twenty-five members (Greek American Society).
The positive impact of the ΓΑΣ (GAS) was immediate, and it has remained a successful, influential group since its inception in 1937. The sorority is best known for providing an annual Christmas event for the entire membership of the St. George community. Many photographs from this event and others, such as their Anniversary Celebration and Summer Covered Dish outing, have been recorded to the St. George family album.
